Physiotherapy is a term applied to many different physical modalities and treatments. The modalities offered at Southpark Chiropractic are: electrical muscle stimulation also known as interferential or Russian stim, ultrasound, far-infrared mineral lamp, hot and cold packs, traction, vasopneumatic devices, ultraviolet, range-of-motion exercises, proprioception exercises, some strength training exercises and more.
A far-infrared lamp (TDP mineral lamp) is a heating device using infrared rays. The idea behind this TDP lamp is that the natural processes of healing in the body are accelerated with microcirculation, upon the limited and regulated impact of infrared light. A TDP lamp is mainly therapeutic , using heat in the form of harmless infrared rays combining with the rejuvenating powers of many minerals to treat different diseases like arthritis, sprains, bronchitis and a variety of other diseases , while not getting burnt. The TDP lamp helps Dr. Bethel give patients who are suffering from arthritis and body pain some temporary relief.
Electrical muscle stimulation or EMS (Russian stim, interferential) is a device that utilizes pads that adhere to the skin surface and apply a very low intensity electrical current that can produce many beneficial physiological effects on the body. Depending upon the settings EMS is good for: decreasing pain, decreasing muscle spasm, increasing healing rate, reduces muscle atrophy and increase fracture healing. A light tingling sensation is felt in the underlying skin and muscle. This signal disrupts the pain signal that is being sent from the affected area to the surrounding nerves. By breaking this signal, the patient experiences less pain. Many of our patients have described this sensation as feeling "like a massage."
Ultrasound utilizes a very high frequency sound (1MHz) which is beyond the normal range of hearing. These soundwaves penetrate below the skin up to 3cm to "vibrate" these deeper tissues causing a warming sensation and a micro-massage that decreases pain, increases enzymatic activity, increases collagen extensibility, reduces edema or swelling and breaks up calcium deposits. It's uses are: soft tissue injuries, chronic joint dysfunction, osteoarthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, nerve entrapment (like carpal tunnel), muscle spasms and chronic sprain/strains.
