Chiropractic Techniques

Diversified Technique is the most commonly used manipulative technique by chiropractors.   Like many chiropractic manipulative techniques, Diversified is characterized by a high velocity low amplitude thrust. Diversified is considered the most generic chiropractic manipulative technique and is differentiated from other techniques in that its objective is to restore proper movement and alignment of spine and joint dysfunction.  The Diversified technique addresses biomechanical failure in each section of the spine, as it relates to partial dislocation.

Thompson Technique is a chiropractic adjustment performed on a table in which cushions drop an inch or two when a thrust is applied to the spine. Practitioners locate subluxations (dislocations or problems with the vertebrae) by checking leg length.

Gonstead Technique is a system of correcting pelvic and sacral “subluxations” to correct secondary subluxations elsewhere in the spine. The alleged problem areas are located by motion palpation and skin-temperature instrument measurement. The man who developed this technique, Clarence S. Gonstead, DC, taught infant and child adjustments as a part of his seminars on this technique.

Flexion-Distraction technique has become the most widely used approach to treating symptomatic disc injuries involving back pain and the often-accompanying leg pain (also known as Sciatica). Flexion-distraction involves the use of a specialized table that gently distracts or stretches the spine and which allows the chiropractor to isolate the area of disc involvement while slightly flexing the spine in a pumping rhythm. There is no pain involved in the treatment.

Sacral Occipital Technique (SOT) is a method of chiropractic care designed to normalize the relationship between the foundation of the spine (sacrum) and the top of the spine (occipital). The therapy aims to reduce or eliminate pain, but its primary goal is to normalize whole body function. Based upon the provable fact that every human who is sick or in pain has a distortion and a subluxation responsible for that sickness or pain. . . . When you make the right adjustment, at the right spot and the right time, and in the right direction, you release enough nerve energy to cure most anything.

Activator Method is a proprietary diagnostic and treatment system based on the belief that differences in leg length indicate the need for spinal adjustments. The technique utilizes a small handheld instrument, called an activator, with a soft rubber tip to deliver a light, circumscribed force to the area deemed in need of treatment. This device is categorized as a mechanical force manual assisted (MFMA) instrument which is generally regarded as a softer chiropractic treatment technique.
